  • Vermont Irene Recovery Information Update

Our thoughts continue to be with all residents, visitors and businesses affected by last weekend's devastating flooding. Vermont continues to make progress on roads and bridges washed away. Virtually all communities have at least partial access to outside areas now, although much more needs to be done.

The legislative leadership has put together a good resource of information on how to help and get help. It can be accessed here.

Senator Leahy's office has also put together a good variety of where to get assistance guide.

If you need help with certain equipment appraisals for insurance or help replacing your foodservice items, you might want to contact VGA associate member, Kittredge Equipment.

  • Statewide Fund Launches for Business Flood Relief

Montpelier, VT - September 1, 2011 - The devastation from Tropical Storm Irene is evident throughout Vermont, from flood-blasted bridges to wrecked roadways to mud-crusted houses. But it's the impact on small local businesses that got Todd Bailey motivated to create a statewide relief fund.

The Vermont Irene Flood Relief Fund, administered by Central Vermont Community Action, will raise funds to help affected business owners get their doors open quickly. Donations can be made online or by check (www.vtirenefund.org) and fellow businesses in unaffected areas of the state and around country will be holding fundraising events to support the effort.

  • Vermont Health Care Reform

There has been a lot of discussion about Health Care Reform in Vermont. Over the past couple of months, VGA and other organizations have met with members of the Administration to discuss Health Care Reform and to better understand the elements of the new Health Care Reform law. We hope to provide all of our members with information on the elements of the new law that take effect in the next few years.
While the new law is many pages long, much of it lays the groundwork for future discussion. However, the new law does establish a Health Care Exchange that begins in 2014 with enrollment beginning in the fall of 2013. The Health Care Exchange is, initially, a forum where small businesses and individuals can purchase health insurance through a state portal.

The design of the exchange is governed both by the Federal Health Care reform legislation and by the new Vermont law. At this point it is unclear if your plan choices will be minited in the exchanged or enhanced.

A summary prepared by the Vermont Chamber and Vermont Retail Association can be found here. Periodically VGA will provide additional updates.
